Sub's Upgrade

(QUOTE) | (REPLY)

posted 3/10/2010, 183d 22h 38m ago (link) (top)

In the next week or 2, enough parts should arrive that I can actually get over 8 fps in a raid setting.

Eventually, I'd like to upgrade the case (and possibly motherboard). If people have cost effective suggestions, I'd like to hear them.
Keep in mind this will also be my primary development machine, not just for gaming.

Processor
Core2Duo 2.32ghz ====> i7 920

Video Card
128mb Ati Radeon Mobility 3400 ====> Geforce GTX 260

Ram
4gb ddr3 ====> 12gb ddr3 (1333ghz)

Monitor
14" (1400x900) ====> 25" (1980x1080)

Storage
80gb 7200rpm ====> 1 TB 10000rpm

Network
54mbit wireless ====> 1000mbit ethernet

Motherboard
MSI x58m
Someone with more knowledge about this should give me their opinion; it placed mid-range in terms of game benchmarks but pretty high some processing (non-graphics) benchmarks.

Case
Cheap case, from costco... hurray! I may get a nicer case in the future (especially if cooling is an issue); at this time, looks really don't matter to me. Grey box inc.

Power Supply
Need to find 500+W power supply, compatible with gtx 260. Suggestions?
I'm leaning towards: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817709023

Keyboard
Looking for one with scissor-hinge style keys, similar to a laptops.
Currently thinking about Lycosa... need suggestions/reviews please.

I've long since been out of the loop with computer parts... but I think got Vv a GeForce GTX 260 (I don't remember).

Anyway, newegg has plenty of cheap/good power supplies. That's where I usually get all my computer stuff.

Looking at all this new stuff... makes me feel like I need to buy another computer... lol. I think I'll stick with my "crappy" comp for now ><

Well, I figured it was time ... my laptop by no means is bad. However, as wow advances, my graphics card just can't handle effects as I'd like them with 25 people. In 10 man raids, my performance is fine. In 25man, I have all settings (except view distance) set to minimum. If I pause recount, I get 14-15 FPS... dropping to 5-6 for aoe/high spell effect sections.
With recount enabled, it drops my framerate to 8 max. 2-3 in aoe.

On a new note, I also need a desk now (and a chair!)... sigh.

14" monitor >.< I feel bad for you!

We have recently built ourselves new computers I found spending 50-70 bucks on a new designed case made putting everything together much easier. I'm sure it would have taken me double the time and +5 cuts in my old case.

This is the case we went with(no longer on sale) but newegg has many with free shipping for cheap before blowing 20-40 on a costco special.

For your CPU cooler, look no further than the Prolimatech Megahalems

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/8807/cpu-pro-01/Prolimatech_Megahalems_Rev_B_Intel_CPU_Heatsink_LGA_77511561366_AM2AM2AM3_Hot_Item.html?id=RUWuutM2#blank

After spending hours researching CPU coolers last spring in preparation for building my new computer, it is overall the best. Not only in looks, but also in its design, performance and quality. If you want, I can send you pictures of mines to give you a scale of how it fits in with everything.

This is going to be such a huge performance upgrade over your current system.. how exciting!!! :) :) I played on a crap computer once upon a time, it makes wow so much more fun to not be lagged out to hell.

When I bought my power supply, the uber nerd/tech guy explained to me why an Antec 550W (for example) is better than a cheap 800W off-brand. It has to do with the way it distributes power among individual rails which are then dedicated to specific components (ie; separating the rail for your video card from the rail for you mobo/hdd/etc).

Most of what he said was over my head, but from what I gathered, I'd recommend Antec PSUs that specify volts and amps per rail such as these:

Unless you're gonna need 12 gig of ram for video editing and stuff like that, you can cut back on that and get 6 gig of ddr3 and save yourself some money. Personally, I chose 6gig of ram and have had no regrets.

Power Supply is very important, and I spent the most time researching which PSU to buy. My results were the Corsair 1000hx, and the Enermax Revolutions 85+ series.

While both are over a 100% increase in price then the one you listed in your proposed build, you can be assured (read the reviews) that both of these PSUs are rock solid.

I finally chose the Enermax Revolution 85+ (Included 5 year warrenty). It's really heavy, but its form factor allows it to fit easily into smaller cases too (something the 1000hx might have a problem doing). It's also half modular so you dont have a cable mess in your case. In addition, its also (at the time I bought it) the most power efficient PSU on the market, with excellent load on all 12v rails. Theres a lot of other really cool features about this PSU that you will like.

Choose carefully on the PSU, you may regret buying a cheap no name brand PSU in the future if it breaks down.

Never ever cheap out on PSU, Corsair 550 - 750W will be enough for your GTX 260, try to get GTX 260 Core 216 if you can(evga). If you are going to overclock you'll need to go with 750W, and 1000W will be an overkill and energy hog/waste for what you are getting.

Never cheap out on a fan either, all stock fans are terrible, especially since you are getting an i7 and it WILL get hot. Newegg doesn't really sell great CPU fans but if you can get your hands on a Noctua Cooler you won't regret it. Make sure you install CPU fan the correct way as well, I've seen a lot of computers all setup wrong, the fan needs to blow hot air out of the case. Diagram -> http://www.build-gaming-computer-guide.com/image-files/computer-case-airflow-diagram.jpg

Your MSI X58M is known for not having a heatsink on the MOSFETs, hence a good CPU fan is needed. Otherwise its pretty good, might be overkill for just installing one GTX 260 on it though. Not a big deal if you got the money. Room to upgrade too for the future.

Case is important too for airflow, sub $100 cases are enough. Antec usually has good ones, top tier are Lian-li.

I actually have GTX260Core216 and a Corsair 750 myself, CPU OC'd 3.0ghz to 3.6ghz, I can push 3.8ghz in winter, in summer I actually tune it down to 3.2-3.4ghz, since I don't air condition house 24/7 (swimming pool in backyard).

+1, 12gig is overkill unless you are doing rendering work, etc.

The 14.1" screen really wasn't much of a problem, as its resolution (1400x900) is actually pretty good.

The 12gb ram is already purchased at an awesome price, and I often am doing development stuff/hosting web/file servers etc. As I said, this will be my primary development machine as well, so the ram was more for that; being able to host a few servers, a vm or 2 and a couple dev environments. I currently run at about 3-3.5gb used at any time, the 12 will be a nice cushion.

The powersupply I linked is modular, and as far as I know does give power output based on each rail. From the reviews, it is not a terrible psu. The warranty is only 1 year, but with a decent surge protector, how often do they explode unless defective?
More info on it, showing rail specific stuff
http://www.sunbeamtech.com/PRODUCTS/Power-supply/680-power-supply.html

Your cooler looks just plain goofy! I'll look into it. The motherboard/bios support OC'ing up to 4ghz, which I won't do unless I have a decent cooler. I think finding a more sufficient case will help more with cooling than a funkyloooking heatsync. I actually haven't looked into fans/syncs yet... thanks for the reminder.

Bulgio, that case is pretty nice. The case I got is actually really really cheap... snap out expansion slots, single fan thing... I'll actually look for a real case later. I really don't care about what it looks like, but I do have a fuzzy dog, so I may try to find some way of making my computer's insides not fuzzy too. Dogproof computer cases anyone?

And for keyboard... wtb scissor key suggestions. There is 1 possibility by logitech and the lycosa (i think is scissor). I got a g15 on ebay, which turned out to be the italian version; although it was awesome, there was too much travel in keys for my liking. If i could just adapt my lenovo laptop board to desktop... hmmmm

The PSU that I got for my GeForce 9600 GT was a Corsair 550:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004&cm_re=corsair-_-17-139-004-_-Product

It's enough since I don't overclock anything.

I'm also looking for a good keyboard for gaming too... I'm still using my stock one... and it's ok, but I could probably go with a keyboard that has lighter keys (though, smashing my keyboard is pretty awesome too... at times... and I don't feel bad with a cheapo one).

Razer has some nice products but I dunno if I want to shell out that much cash for something unless I know it's really good. The only thing I've bought from Razer is the headset (Razer Carcharias Gaming Headset) just because it's so damn comfortable.

I have the keyboard and the mouse(Lachesis) and love them. The keyboard to me doesn't matter as much as the mouse but either way I'd buy another Razor product if I had the extra cash. I'd love to have the headset but I tend break them too often and have been sticking with a 30 dollar pair that has a 1 yr track record so far.

Ah, cool. Vv (Vvispor if you guys are wondering who I'm talking about) got the DeathAdder and he's pretty happy with it? (I think).

I have a Logitech mouse and it's pretty good. No complaints about it. I just need to upgrade the keyboard.

You know what the difference between the 3 keyboards for Razer is? I could go for the cheaper one... but I've actually tried the Lycosa (at Blizzcon) and it's pretty sweet.

High performance fan coolers will always look like that, huge heatsink and a fan to blow the hot air off it.
http://www.frostytech.com/top5heatsinks.cfm

Take a look at http://www.overclockers.com/forums/ , regulars over there are helpful, and lots of existing threads to answer your questions. (ie. O/C'ing i7, RAM timings, fan/water cooling suggestions etc.)

I personally love the old clicky mechanical IBM keyboards, my dad works at IBM so we had a bunch lying around, sadly I kept spilling shit over it when I was a kid, my last one had a broken space button so I went with the Logitech G15 Keyboard, had to get used to it since ctrl+#s were quite hard to use at first. Baddiecraft recommended me the Logitech G5 mouse, its just pure awesome for the price, will buy another if it ever craps out.
